Back to the roots - Part 3
6st day - 1st March 2002
Camp6 -
Stª Ollala del Cala - Arroyomolinos - Fregenal de la
Sierra - Encinasola - Camp7 near Barrancos
Never
go to Stª Ollala, these people will ripe you off ! "Why",
do you ask ? I found there a super market, bought water, a
yogurt and some biscuits and without asking the girl at the
cashier put it all into a plastic bag. I thought, I don't
need the bag to carry the stuff, but it might come in handy
for garbage or something. Later I checked out the bill and
to my annoyance I realized, that I paid for the damn bag !!!
0,03 went to hell.
Hehe, just kidding.
I was glad
to leave the heavy traffic behind and soon was back into the
quiet mood. The day, gray, windy and cold, had not much to
offer. During a pause I laid rusty cans on the road and watched
the few, passing cars slam them. In Arroyomolinos, during
a rather steep climb, local kids embarrassed me shouting out
"Telepizza".
So the day passed by, I got closer to the border and I thought:
" Tonight is the last camp, I want it nice. So I better
look for one, before I cross the border. Because in Spain
the road was all new (means: nice, new sewers) and in Portugal
probably not."
And that's what I did. Finished early, had a nice dinner and
a great night.

7st day - 2nd Mar
Camp7
near Barrancos - Amareleja - to Pick up point near Granja
What
a great camp and what a great morning: sun shining, no noise
at all, birds singing in the woods. I spent more than a liter
of water to do some basic washing and change my clothes, an
important tactic in urban survival. Shortly after I reentered
Portugal, got some more water at a picnic area at the entrance
of Barrancos and kept on biking a bit dismotivated. This changed
dramatically with the appearance of a tractor. It always made
me uncomfortable to be followed by something with +/- my speed,
independent if it's a truck, a motorbike or another biker.
I accelerated to keep the guy at bay and it got pretty serious
in all this ups and downs. As the tractor was going with constant
speed he closed in on the way up, but couldn't follow on the
downhill. Fortunately he later disappeared in some fields,
I couldn't have taken it much longer. Ros called telling me,
that she was arriving and soon after the bike was stuffed
in the compartment of our car. And the trip was over.
